Maldivian activist faces jail for blasphemy / Update

The verdict in the blasphemy case against Maldivian activist Rusthum Mujuthaba is due in two days from 11 August 2022. Accused of posting blasphemous contents on social media, he was detained for more than six months without trial under the Maldives’ Penal Code, in violation of international human rights law. The Maldivian authorities must immediately drop the charges against Mohamed Rusthum Mujuthaba.

The rights to freedom of expression, thought, conscience and religion are universal. Rusthum Mujuthaba should not have been in jail for exercising his right to freedom of religion in the Maldives. We call on @PGO_mv to drop the charges against him immediately. #JailRusthumNoMore
