Alaa Abdel Fattah is still on hunger strike and since visiting him on 12 June, his sister Mona Seif has joined him on the strike, standing in solidarity with her brother. She reported how drastic Alaa Abdel Fattah’s weight loss was and how fragile he seemed. On 9 June, his lawyer posted on Facebook that he had been denied access to Alaa Abdel Fattah, despite having official permission to visit him.
Meanwhile, on 21 June, British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, publicly vowed to intervene to help free Alaa, who is a British national, stating that the British authorities are «working very hard to secure his release», and said she would raise his case during the upcoming visit of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry.
