Abdelfattah Said released

AI-Index: MDE 30/3467/2016

Tunisian teacher Abdelfattah Said has been freed. His case was dismissed by a court of appeal on 5 February.

Mathematics teacher Abdelfattah Said had been arrested by Tunisian counter-terrorism police on 7 July 2015 for posting a video about the June 2015 attack on a hotel in the town of Sousse on his Facebook page. Although terror and defamation charges brought against him were dropped, he was sentenced to one year in prison for “knowingly broadcasting false news”, under Article 306 of the Tunisian Penal Code.

After nearly seven months of imprisonment, Abdelfattah Said was released from al-Mornaguia Prison, Tunis, late in the evening of 5 February after a court of appeal dropped the charges against him and dismissed his case.

No further action is requested from the UA network. Many thanks to all who sent appeals.
