Expected date for verdict issued against Shawkan postponed to 28 July
On 30 June, the Cairo Criminal Court set the 28 July as the new expected date for issuing the verdict against Shawkan and 738 other defendants in the Rabaa dispersal case. The court reasoned that the Ministry of Interior was unable to transport all the defendants to the court for security reasons, and as such the court decided to postpone the verdict.
The Egypt Team spoke with Shawkan’s brother, who said that: «It is unfair for a journalist to be imprisoned all of that time merely for doing his work. Why would he be imprisoned in pre-trial detention for over four years? This is punitive, not pre-trial detention.»
